THE EGMONT MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (Notes by "Moturoa.”) The Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting, which takes place to-day and to-morrow, promises to be the finest race gathering ever held on the Hawera course. The leading Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Taranaki stables are represented, and the likely runners include noted performers like Gloaming, Surveyor, Silver Link, Rude, Acre, Starland, Warplane, Solfanello, and Landslide. All first day’s events have filled well, and provided the weather holds good racing should be interesting, and the outing a most enjoyable one. Racing opens at 11.45 a.m. with the Ohawe Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, for which there are nine acceptors. Zola, Khartoum and Explorer will all be well backed, and the last-named has only to run up to his Awapuni form to be handy at the finish.
A dozen hold their ground in the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, and this race should be one of the best of the day. In good going Warplane would be dangerous, but Inah •and Income have a big pull in the weigths, and a little rain would enhance their prospects greatly. At all events this pair have only to reproduce their most recent form to show up in the sprints at the meeting. A good field of twenty is carded for the Mere Mere Hack Handicap, five furlongs, and quick beginners like Irapuka, Flying Master and Canyon should have much In their favor round the turns. z
A handy field of eight will combat tie Egmont Cup, one mile and a half, but a large acceptance anight have been expected for such n fine stake. However, the acceptors are mostly of a good class. Surveyor gave us a taste of his quality at New Plymouth, but 9.9 may anchor him over twelve furlongs. Rude (8,10) is reported to be very forward, and should run well. Marqucteur is well in with 8.3, but a mile and a quarter would suit him better. The best handicapped horse is undoubtedly Starland (8.3), who won the Takapuna Cup in easy style. Landslide (7.6) is another dangerous customer, and he should hold the light-weights safe. When the tote bells stop ringing Starland. Landslide find Surveyor should have four figures before their names. Fifteen remain In the Apprentices’ Handicap, seven furlongs, and if good horsemen can be secured for Automoana and Quhiiro they should be noticed on the journey.
Gloaming will be the chief attraction in the Egmont Stakes, six furlongs, which, race he won in 1919, when he defeated Desert Gold. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s horses have won four of the seven races for the Egmont Stakes, and three of the ten Hawera Stakes run.
With Gloaming his chance of further inn- I proving his winning averages appears very bright. Another good field will line up for the Waipapa Hack Handicap, eight and a half furlongs. They include good performers like Admyra, Warrawee, Stork and Admiration, of which the last-named may prove the best. La Paloma and Lord Ashlea are a pair of lightweights that will also show up at the end. To-day’s programme concludes with the Whareroa Welter ■ Handicap, seven furlongs, for which fifteen are carded. Simonides and Solfanello, if reserved, will have big followings, but in their absence the public may go for Voluble and Prodigal. Nominations for the' Dannevirke Racing Club’s meeting, to be held on March 2 and 3, close on Friday, February 11, at 8 p.m.
