The hdjourned conference between the executive of the Seamen’s Federation and representatives of the shipowners concluded to-day without a settlement of the bonus question. It is understood the shipowners are firm in the decision not to increase the offer of 10s per month. TAXATION AND ECONOMY. Christchurch, Feb. 8. A lengthy resolution unanimously adopted last evening by the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce embodied a protest against the present tendency of the public finances. The council brings again under the Government’s notice the request of the Chamber of Commerce for an inquiry into the incidence of taxation and the exer* cise c* greater economy in national expenditure, and in addition asks that the payers of income-tax.be relieved so far as the present year is concerned to the extent of being allowed to make payment in two instalments at an interval of mx months. NO WORK AFTER FIVE. / Auckland, Feb. 8. As a result of the watersiders’ decision not to work after. 5 o’clock, the departure oi the Opawa, Ruahine and Te Anau for coastal ports have been delayed. No work was done to-day on the Otarama, which arrived from Liverpool yesterday, as no men responded to the call for labor. Apparently there is not a shortage of labor, but no reason was given. Discussing the position, a prominent member' of the union said that while the decision not to work after five was constitutional, it was in effect the introduction of the go-slow policy. AN ALLEGED ASSAULT. , Christchurth; Feb. 8. As a result of a quarrel at the servants’ breakfast-fable at the Federal Hotel, Frank Delsie was arrested yesterday charged with having caused grievous bodily harm to Clarence Hahn who was gashed in the forearm by a table knife. Delsie appeared this morning before the Magistrate’s Court. The police asked for a remand until February 16. An application for bail was refused, the Magistrate saying that before the Court could consent something must be known of the case.
