MELBOURNE WOOL SALES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, Feb. 8. The selection of wool was one of the best of the season, including a large proportion of superior merinos, the bulk of which was bright and attractive. Competition was exceedingly active. It immediately became apparent that American buyers were interested. Practically all sold, the top price being 44d. NEWTON KING, LTD., REPORTS. At Stony River on Ist Feb. 1921, catilt came ftn ward in big numbers, there alBs being a good number of sheep, mostly lambs. A very good clearance of both classes was made, cattie showing little improvement In prices, and sheep, compared with the previous sale were a shade easier in values. Weaner pigs 4s 6d, 6s 6d, 7s 6d, mature do 18s, 225, shorn cull lambs 3s, ’woolly lambs 8s 3d, 10s 6d, forward do. 12s 6d, 13s, rape do. 15s 7d, ewes with l lambs 15s 6d, fat ewes 20s, weaner steers 225, weaner heifers 355, 16 month empty heifers £3 2s, £3 4s 6d, £3 10s, in calf heifers £4, £5 10s, £6 2s, 18month steers £3, £3 2s 6d, store cows £2 10s, £3 10, £3 15s, fat do. £7 12s 6d, £.9 14s, cows and calf £7 7s 6d, dairy heifers £8 10s, £9 10s, shorthorn bull £3 15s.
At Walwakaiho on 4th inst. the yarding was small and enquiry dulL Weaner heifers 10s, mixed weaners 255, empty heifers £5 12s 6d, cows and calf £6 ss, store cows £3 10s, £4 15s, £5 ss, fat do. £8 17s 6d. At Awakino Sheep and Cattle Fair on sth. Feb. 1921, we report a full yarding of both sheep and cattle and fair attendance of buyers. Grown bullocks comprised the bulk of 4he cattle offering and all lines in good condition sold readily. The sale for other classes had a dragging tendency, but vendors in most cases were prepared to meet present market values, and little remained unsold. The offering of sheep, with one exception, was quitted at the hammer, there being good enquiry throughout. Both local and outside buyers were operating. HAMILTON MARKET. The Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report:— At Hamilton, on Thursday, February 3, we had a moderate yarding of cattle, sheep and pigs, the bulk of which was disposed of. The tone generally was very weak, but vendors appear to realise that there is little prospect of Improvement in the near future. The decline just recorded In freezing values was clearly reflected in the bidding for fat stock at auction. Steers made to £l2, heavy cows £9 10s to £ll 2s, lighter weights £6 10s to £9 2s Gd. The demand for fresh cows was very feeble, prices ranging from' £3 to £4 15s. A good line of 3yr steers from Te Akau failed to reach owners’ valuation, and were passed in. Twenty-months heifers in calf sold under moderate competition from £5 12s Gd to £6 14s, steers of the same age to £4. Calves were in fair demand up to a certain point, realising from 17s to 355, according to size and quality. Heavy bulls ranged from £4 10s to £B, according to weight. Fat sheep also showed a decline, best ewes making to 235. “ape lambs were fairly well competed for, and made to 18s; smaller sorts Ils 6d to 13s Gd. Pigs were much on the basis of last week’s rates, baconers selling up to £4 4s, porkers 35s to £3, slips 15s to 255, weaners 7s to 12s Gd. Dairy cows in milk and at profit Improved tri value, selling from £l4 10s to £l7 ss; others £6 10s to £lO 10s.
