CARPENTERS’ WAGES.
REDUCTION IN WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. It is reported that the Wellington builders and contractors have decided that in future ■carpenters are not to receive more than 2s 9d per hour, and this will be the uniform rate for the city and suburban work. Hitherto 3s an hour and 9d extra for suburban work has been given. The men are objecting strongly to the reduction, and as a result several contractors have lost all their carpenters. It is pointed out that the rate decided upon (2s 9d) is considerably in excess of the award race, which does not exceed 2s 4d per hour. The men meet tomorrow, to discuss the position. While it is admitted that there might be some difficulty in enforcing a uniform wage on all jobs, the contractors are reported to be determined to stand firm as far as possible.
