Nothing can be done until Parliament meets,” said Mr Massey to-day to a reporter who questioned him concerning the insistent demands that are being made by taxpayers for relief in the matter of the immediate payment of income tax due shortly. Mr. Massey went on to explain that the legislation on the question was definite that income tax must be paid in one sum not later than the end of February. Will there be legislation? the Prime Minister was asked. “There may be,” replied Mr. Massey. “I have given instructions to the department to deal as gently as possible with all cases of hardship, and to meet taxpayers as far as practicable. I realise that the financial conditions are not as satisfactory as in past years.
