OPINION IN GERMANY. i attitude of defiance* PLEA FOR EQUAL RIGHTS* B? Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 8, 7.25 p.m, Berlin, Feb. 7. • Government circles regard Mr. Lloyd George’s speech as a concession. Herr von Simons’ view is that the German delegates to the London Conference should have equal rights, with liberty to make proposals.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Munich, Feb. 7. An Independent Socialist paper reports that a military coup d’etat is expected, and foreshadows the attachment of Austria to Bavaria. Berlin, Feb. 7. The Frankfort Gazette publishes a scheme whejreby the reparations might be liquidated by the issue of international gold certificates of £lOOO sterling and equivalents in francs and dollars not bearing interest, and redeemable on agreed dates either by gold or on goods based on gold value. The Allied Governments could use the certificates as gold cover for credits. Mr. Lloyd George’s promise to consider counter-proposals has been received with great relief. It is interpreted as meaning that the Paris terms are not absolutely final. the invitation to the London Conference is likely to be accepted, but the note of defiance persists. Herr von Simons is unequivocally pledged to the rejection of the Paris decisions. The Government’s stubbornness has been further intensified by a week-end deluge of infuriated resolutions carried at protest nteetings. The Press shows symptoms of timorousness, but generally supports the Government. —Times.
