The Egmont County Council in faced with very heavy road maintenance charges, owing to the absence of facilities for railway transportation, necessitating all the produce from the district and all the requirements of the settlers having to be carted on the roads. At the last meeting of the Egmont County Council a resolution passed bv the council was forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works urging that th? Te RotiUpunake railway be completed without delay, in view of the difficult) being experienced at the present time in maintaining the roads owing to the heavy loads carried, and failing this, that the Government grant the council sufficient money to lay ■ down the foundation work to Opunake. The resolution further protested against the deviation of the line to Manaia. At yesterday’s . meeting of the council replies were received from both ihe Prime Minister and- the Minister of Public Works. The Premier stated that he would take 1116 earliest opportunity of bringing the representations under the notice of the Minister of Public Works for his consideration, whilst the Minister of Public Works stated that he would give the representations his careful consideration.
