WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Feb. 7. Mr. E. Clare has been appointed care- ■ taker of the Soldiers and Civilians’ , Club. The local, constable has had a busy time in the registration of arms, more particularly on account of the department running out of printed forms, which had to be typed. The town was deserted for the New Plymouth races last Wednesday and Thursday. The Waitara freezing works employees took a whole holiday on the Wednesday; At the annual meeting of the Waitara Freezing Workers’ Union held last week Mr. T. Ewens was re-elected president, and Mr. A. Bowen vice-president, and an executive consisting of a man from each department was appointed. It was decided to have a whole holiday on the day of the sports, and a day for a picnic is to be selected some time in March.

Mr. E. Smith, who went to Helensville for a health trip, has returned much improved. At the Magistrate’s Court held last Wednesday land agents’ licenses were granted to Geo Bird, Gaustad Marlow and Co., Lund and Sampson, W. F. Jenkins, and G. F. Walker.

The Druids’ Lodge have made a presentation to Mesdames Spurdie, Procter and Sampson, in recognition of the help given to the society in managing 'functions held by -them at various periods. The recipients thanked the donors for the gifts, but stated that they did not look for them, as they were always willing to assist functions where their services were required.

Mr. Evan Jones, who has been in business in Waitara as a draper for many years, has purchased a business in Te Aroha. He has been in Waitara the last few days packing up* ready for ■departing for his new surroundings. Local residents will wish Mr. Jlones success in his new venture.

In 1914 a beautifying society was formed in Waitara, but, the war breaking out almost immediately after the society’s formation, its energies were otherwise directed. May I suggest that those same gentlemen get busy again, and be instrumental in forming a beautifying society, of which the town is greatly in need. There are many spots that could be improved by the planting of freest Then we have the Camp Reserve, and a recreation ground which, in its present state, nobody seems to take much notice of, but which could be made attractive. These small towns are dull places at any time, but why not make them more pleasant to live in? Argument is in favor of an approach to the Camp Reserve by way of Broadway, and no doubt this could be managed with very little capital. What is wanted first is a beautifying society to be formed to move in these matters. It is just possible the Domain Board could be taken over by the society if formed, and the Domain improved and made attractive and a place of beauty.
