The claims of the post and telegraph officers, stated Mr. Massey, were referred to a committee of heads of departments six months ago, and after going into the whole circumstances the committee recommended that provision should be made for a rateable increase or a reduction in the amount then being granted should the cost of living rise or fall. He had communicated with the committee—Messrs W. R. Morris (Public Service CommissionerL R. W. MeVilly (General Manager, of Railways). Markman (permanent head of Post ■and Telegraph Department)—and the had replied: “tn accordance with the promise given it is now time to review the matter, and the Government Statistician hgs therefore been masked to supply information in regard ftb the present cost of r living figures We hope .to receive this information by -the middle of this month.‘and as soon as it wines to hand a further report will be furnished.”
