A Sydney cable Yepprts the death of Mr. C. W. Beal, manager of the first cricket team to bring “The Ashes” to Australia. Mr. Justice Hosking, who is to preside at the sitting of the Supreme Court which opens at New Plymouth this morning, arrived in New Plymouth last night. Mr. F. J. Hill has tendered his resignation as the New Plymouth Borough Council representative on the Taranaki Hospital Board, and at last night’s meeting of the council Mr. J. S. S. Med ley was appointed to fill the vacancy. A well-known resident of Auckland, ■\lr. Charles Kalman, died at his residence, Park Avenue, last week. Mr. Kalman was in the seventy-second year of his age. He was for a long time licensee of the Central Hatel, Auckland. The death of Captain James Callaghan took place last week in the Auckland Hospital at the age of 78 years. The deceased, who was wellknown in shipping circles, was employed for many year,-- by the Fiji Government on the steamer Clyde, and also in other positions, until he retired on a pension some years ago. Mr. F. J. Hill (deputy-Mayor). who leaves next week en route to England with the New Zealand bowling team, was granted leave of absence at last night’s meeting of the New Plvjuouth Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) extended best wishes to Mr. Hill for a most enjoyable trip, and also expressed the hope that Mr. Hill would arrange for re-nomination as a candidate at the next council election. He had done good work for the borough and, even in his absence was sure to be re-elected if he decided to become a candidate. The death has occurred in England of Mr. James Matthews, son of the celebrated Julia Matthews, who was the original Grand Duchess iw Offenbach’s comic opera of that name. Deceased was born in Dunedin 46 years ago, and was well-known as a theatrical manager in both Britain and America. He was also on the stage for ten years. Matthews was a prominent Freemu si ’“’ past master of the Asaph Lodge. alld founder and past master of the Ch e,ce:l Ixidge and founder and past master the Proscenium Lodge. He wa c P.G.D.C., and represented New Zealand in Grand Lodge.
