When sentencing John Andrew Riddell, aged 22, on two charges of forgery and three of false pretences involving £237, his Honor Judge Stringer commented on the amazing carelessness of people in business houses. Accused walked into a stock agent’s office, said he was the son of a client, and received an open cheque for £159, which he cashed at the bank. Later he telephoned the same firm representing that ‘ e was the son of another client, wit • •• result that a cheque was sent t . ‘tr. at a certgin address, whereupon no went to another firm, tendered the cheque in payment, and received an open cheque for the balance.
