SPORTING.

TARANAKI TROTTING CLUB. BEOOND ANNUAL MEETING. JEWEL WOOD WINS THE CUP. The second 'annnual meeting under the auspices of the Taranaki Trotting Club was held on Saturday on the New Plymouth racecourse, which, with its appointments, had been placed at the club’s disposal by the Taranaki Jockey Club. The weather was flue, but the attendance though fair, was hardly commensurate with what the club might have expected from the sporting public. However, this can be accounted for by the fact that the club has no totalisator permit, and there is no doubt that when a permit is granted, as it is hoped will be the case before long, and the club is able to offer good stakes, trotting will become very popular at this end of the province. Though in many of the events the fields were small racing was very interesting, and an enjoyable afternoon’s sport resulted. The Taranaki Trotting Club Cup was won by Mr. Cecil Arden’s Jewel Wood after a good race. The Maiden Plate was won by Mr. Kirk’s Morning Light, which further proved its worth by winning the Inglewood Handicap. The Waitara Handicap, which drew two competitors, proved a good thing for the Hawera-trained Maggie Girl. The Farmers’ Plate caused' considerable amusement. Fourteen horses paraded, some of the riders coming in for good natured badinage as they did their preliminaries. A capital finish ensued between the locally-owned Illumination and the Stratford horse Cliff, the latter winning by two lengths. The last race, the Okato Handicap, proved the best contest of the day, H. Rowe’s Mindful winning after a fine struggle. Mr. A. G. Mabie, as starter, despatched his i fields well, whilst Mr. R. H. Pigott occui pled the judge’s box and hoisted the wini n!.ng numbers promptly. Mr. A. G. Mabie also acted as, stipendiary steward and re- ! handicapper, but his first-named position proved a sinecure as there was no cause for inquiry.

The arraitaements for the meeting were perfect, the/events being got off right up to time, and every detail having been provided [ for reflected great credit on the organisi ’.ng abilities of the officials, and particularly the secretary, Mr D. Le C. Morgan, who are to be congratulated on the manner in which they carried out their various duties. The afternoon tea kiosk and the refreshment booth were in the usual capable hands. The Citizens' Band, under Conductor R. Taylor, was present and added to the enjoyment with an appropriate programme of music.
