RECOVERING A MARKET.

GOVERNMENT ARRANGES FOR A SHIP. SHIPMENTS TO SOUTH AMERICA. An announcement that the Government had arranged for the dispatch of a ship to Argentina early in Anarch was made by the Minister of Agriculture in Feilding on Tuesday. The Minister asked apple-growers and breeders of Romney sheep to help make up a cargo. The despatch of this ship has been arranged in response to many requests that an effort should be made to revive trade that was in process of development before the war. New Zealand was finding a very profitable outlet for apples in South America prior to August, 1914, while sheep-breeders were finding a market in the republics at attractive prices for a considerable number of stud-sheep. The war, with its diversion of shipping, virtually cut New Zealand off from South America, and the general use of the Panama Canal has militated against the recovery of the lost connection. Shipping is no longer scarce now, and if cargoes are offering, a regular connection with South American ports could be arranged. Whether or not sufficient cargo, is available remains to be seen. The apple-growers are going to take the matter into consideration, and it is likely that they will arrange to send a big consignment of export apples to South America, thus securing for themselves the outlet that they have been denied in recent years. It has been found that the local market can absorb a much larger quantity of apples that was believed to be possible before the war, and the growers do not intend to neglect what ought to be their best and most convenient market.
