CRICKET

ENGLAND v. VICTORIA. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. VICTORIA MAKES 268. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 4, 7.30 p.m Melbourne, Feb. 4. The State cricket match against England was commenced to-day in good weather and on a sound wicket, but in the presence of a poor attendance of the public. Mayne. (Victoria) won the toss, and opened his innings with Sandford against Hitch and Douglas. The spectators were hostile to Mayne, who took Armstrong’s position. Play was dull at the start, though Mayne batted with confidence, scoring a beautiful four off Douglas. Sandford was never easy, and was soon clepn-bowled by Hitch. Park made a poor display, and was caught in slips by Hendren. Ryder batted freely, but was lifting the ball too high. Mayne, after giving a good display, was bowled by Hitch, the ball coming off his pad. Sixty minutes’ play produced forty-five runs. Woolley secured Ponsford in his first over. Ryder and Keating improved the score, and at the lunch adjournment four wickets were down for eighty-seven. Douglas and Hitch took up the bowling on resuming, and Keating was out first over to Hitch. Ferguson . followed, and gave a short but bright display. Hitch was bowling extremely well, having secured four wickets for twentysix. 'Davies, who made his first appearance in big cricket, batted well. Ryder brought up his fifty with a good four. Then Woolley tempted him, and he hit high and was caught. Davies was now 45, not out.

Davies continued to hit freely, and Grimmett was batting nicely till Davies was smartly caught' at the wickets. Macdonald, taking risks, hit Wilson twice over the fence. Wilson, when bowling, came in for a lot of chaff from the spectators. Douglas changed the bowlers frequently, but Macdonald continued to score rapidly, until Rhodes beat him -and got his wicket. The innings closed for 268.

Hobbs and Rhodes started for i England at 5.30 p.m., Macdonald and flyder being the bowlers. Playing against time, Hobbs just lost his wicket a few minutes before stumps were drawn for the day. Following are the scores: ■ VICTORIA
