A public meeting under the auspices [of the Stratford branch of the Now ; Zealand Welfare League was “held in the I municipal chambers last evening, to I hear an address by the league's organ- • iser, Mr. D. McLaren. There was only ’ a small attendance of the public and Mr. W. P. Kirkwood was . voted to the chair. Mr. McLaren said that since he was in Stratford on Saturday last he had ; visited New Plymouth, Hawera, Eltharn [ and Patea, and in all four places | branches of the league had been formed, iHe felt very gratified with the success ■of his mission, and felt sure that the i league would soon be firmly establishied in Taranaki. ! CHAUTAUQUA SEASON. The third annual Chautauqua season : in Stratford will commence in the Town 1 Hall, to-morrow (Friday) afternoon at ; 2.45 p.m. The afternoon programme ’.vill consist of an entertainment by the •‘arnells, a brilliant company who will ' ■ ontribute vocal and instrumental i items, sketches and character portrayals. Also during the afternoon • Miss Sumayeh Attiyeh, the Syrian lecturer, will tell of her life in the Orient and the Occident. The formal opening of the Chautauqua season will take place at the evening session, commencing at 8 pm., when his Worship the Mayor will take the chair. After the opening ceremony, the Parnells and Miss Sumayeh Attiyeh will again provide an excellent programme, which will be entirely different from that submitted at the afternoon session The junior Chautauqua gathering will be held at 4.15 each afternoon and on the last day of the sdason a junior demonstration will be given. Season tickets will be on sale by the local committee until noon to-morrow, after whiyh time they will advance to 12s forxadults. Individual seats will not be reserved during the season, but the dress circle and part of the stalls will he reserved until 7.45 p.m. each evening for holders of season tickets.

WEDDING

The marriage took place at the Methodist Church yesterday of Mr. James Bennett, of Stratford, and Miss Agusta McDonnell, daughter of Mr. Vampbell McDonnell, of Stratford. Miss Grace McDonnell, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid and Mr. P. Healy was best man. The Rev. L. B. Neale officiated at the ceremony. A reception was afterwards held at the Forresters’ Hall, and the happy couple later left for Wanganui, en route for Hamilton where they will reside.
