February 2. The executive of the Stratford Cham- I ber of Commerce met last night. ‘ Present:—Messrs. J. B. Richards (chair- ’ man), P, Thomson, W. P. Kirkwood, T. ; J. Salmon, C. Martin and S. Macalister. : With reference to the proposal of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce to , speed up the Taranaki mail train it was i resolved to ask that Chamber for in- ; formation <3 to what was being done in I the matter, as it was desired that the '• new serv.ee ?ome into operation as soon ! as possible. > The chairman reported that he had brought the matter of a parcels de- 1 livery* lo* Stratford before the Post- • master-General during his recent visit, to Stratford, and the Minister promised ; to inquire into the matter and let the * Chamber have a report.—lt was decid- | ed to write asking the Minister if any | action would be taken. Correspondence dealing with the ques-• tion of direct shipping was read, and ■ the secretary reported that he had given ; publicity to the matter and enlisted the j support of local importers. The plans of the proposed new post • office in Stratford were laid on the table ‘ for inspection by the members, and in ! this connection it was resolved that Mr. ! Masters be asked to communicate by : wire with the Postmaster-General ask- • ing for definite information as to the ! date when tenders would be called for I the new building. The deputy district telegraph en- I gineer wrote, under date December 10,1 stating that a slot telephone for Strat- ' ford had been authorised, but owing to | the shortage of carpenters it may be i some time before it could be provided.— I Decided to draw attention to the delay that had elapsed since the letter had been written and to inform the department that a carpenter could be procured in Stratford if necessary. Messrs. Wright and Lawrence wrote enclosing a letter they had forwarded to the Minister of Railways complaining of the obsolete system of selling tickets at the Stratford station.—The Chamber decided to obtain further information regarding the matter. It was decided to ask the Railway Department for brief particulars of conditions of the proposed new leases for the railway property in Broadway Central, the leases* of which are to be submitted to auction shortly. It was also decided to ask the Rail- ; way Department for information as to | the probable date when the railway/sta- ’ tion alterations will be commenced. ;

CONTINUOUS TELEPHONE EXCHANGE. The Post and Telegraph Department has agreed to grant the request of a majority of the subscribers to the Stratford telephone exchange for a continuous exchange, and it is understood that the change will take place .about the end of the present month. Under the new arrangement business subscribers in Stratford will be charged £8 p’er annum for their telephones, and private subscribers £6,' as at present, THE HALF-HOLIDAY. The Stratford Retailers’ Association announce by advertisement in this issue that the present Thursday halfholiday will be continued in Stratford until further notice. The association wishes to make it known that full piAlicity will be given of the date of the projected change, as soon as official information is available. GENERAL. At the monthly meeting of the Stratford /• Volunteer Fire Brigade, last night, Fireman W. Crofts was appointed delegate to the conference of the Taranaki U.F.B.A. at Inglewood on February 18. Secretary P. A’tken was appointed deleJ gate to the N.Z.U’.F.B.A.’s annual con- ; ference to be held at Napier on February 28. It was decided to run Eltham • for the Challenge Shield, on Thursday, February 24, at Eltham. A team of three firemen will be sent to Napier to compete at the demonstration, which is the first to be held in New- Zealand since 1914.
