AMERICA AND THE EMPIRE. INFLUENCE OF NEW CHAMBER. By Telegraph.—Proas Assn—Copyright. Received Jan. 31, 8.30 p.m. New York, Jan. 29. The British Empire Chamber of Commerce of the United States, under charter from the Imperial Board of Trade, held its inaugural meeting. Representatives of the. English and Canadian Chambers were present. Mr. Mark Sheldon (Australian Trade Commissioner) praised the enterprise of members who gave the Chamber great financial support, and he predicted unqualified success for the body, which would fill a'great need. The Chamber would constitute an authoritative body comprising many prominent men and firms of every class of commerce, welded together, and helping and guiding trade between the Empire and the United States. It would be another magnet drawing two English-speaking peoples closer together. The chairman referred to the great reputation Mr. Sheldon had won for himself in America. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
