RAIDS BY SINN FEIN. <■ MACHINE GUNS IN AMBUSH. REBELS DISARM THE POLICE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 29, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 28. Major Holmes and a party of auxiliaries, proceeding in two motor lorries, were ambushed near Castle Island, Kerry. Forty rebels opened fire from behind fences on both sides of the roadway. Major Holmes was seriously wounded, and one constable was shot dead. A Dublin Castle statement says that sixty raiders at Castle Island used two machine guns. MEN SHOT DEAD. SOLDIERS SURPRISE REBELS. Received Jan. 30, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 29. Armed men entered the Wicklow Hotel, Dublin, and fatally shot William Doran, a porter. Soldiers surprised ambushers at Coachford, Cork, killing one and capturing ten, of whom five were wounded. Thomas Blake, a chemist, of Limerick, was fatally shot in the street near his home. “MINISTER TO THE REPUBLIC.” Received Jan. 30, 55 p.m. Washington, Jan. 28. Representative Mason, of Illinois, offered an amendment to the Diplomatic and Consular Appropriation Bill, authorising the appointment of a Minister to the Republic of Ireland.
