TURF TOPICS.

(By “Moturoa.”) Races at Takapuna, Pahiatua, and ruccarton to-day. Races at New Plymouth on Wednesday and Thursday; and trots on Saturday. Tinohoro carried a heap of money '.n the Takapuna Cup, but finished “absolutely.” Royal Abbey may start favorite Ln the Takapuna J.C. Handicap to-day, but Canowindra will also &e well backed. Tenacious won so easily on Wednesday that a rise of lllbs may not trouble him In the Waiwera Hurdle race. Unahi came from behind and won the Cal-* i Hope Handicap very easily. He will be better backed in the Hobson Handicap this afternoon. Vermillion was one of the unfortunate ones in the Zealandia Handicap on Wednesday, pnd <may he ticked off to do better inter on. Golden Bubble stops at the end of six furlongs, but the distance (five furlongs) In the Suburban Handicap should suit him to a nicety. Surveyor finished very fast at the end ot the Stewards' Handicap at Takapuna on Wednesday, and should strip very fit at New Plymouth next week. Arrowfleld,. now owned in Taranaki, is a member of P. Coffey's team, and will race in his new owner’s colors at New Plymouth. The . southern sportsman, Mr. W, Stone, will be represented by Eleus and Silver Peak at Riccarton, and both should run prominently. Of a very poor lot engaged In-the Jumpers’ Flat at Pahiatua, Persian Prince appears to be most likely to ■ t art favorite. A Wafrarapa scribe ,fates that Dunedin is on the easy list at present, and fears •are expressed that this promising sprinter is “gone” In the wind. Horses ttat appear to be well placed in their Pahiatua engagements Passenger, Mntatua, Larkspur, and Festivity/ An Auckland exchange reports' that the Melbourne and New Zealand Cup winner SaSanof has failed to stand another preparation, and has been retired from the turf. Trainer P. Scally, now of Auckland, has leased Fife and Drum, the disappointing half sister (by' Heather Mixture) to that crackajack, Chortle. Fife and Drum is a maiden. Malingerer Is galloping in fine stylfc at Wanganui, and Hugh.’<e Johnston anticipates tick l ling up the opposition once mor© at the Taranaki meetings. A keen judge who saw Egotism win at Trentham considers that the daughter of Demosthenes and Conceit is the makings of a racehorse above the average, and 1s certainly worth following if started at Riecarton to-day. Zola’s defeats at Trentham cost Wanganui sports a tidy sum of money, but they have no reason to growl. He has been a good horse to them, and has invariably paid a good price in bls wins. Old Munjindi, who has been a failure while carrying Mr. Kemball's colors In New Zealand, is now owne/1 and trained in the Auckland district. He should pick up a small steeplechase in the north. Dewdrop, whose name figures in the Egmont and Hawern Stakes, was—at latest advices—still in Australia.

From Auckland we get the information that Rational is likely to race on the other side of the Tasman. This will he news to most people. Not that be would not' hold his own in life class anywhere. On his Trentham running alone he must be equal to, if not better, than Merrnin, and the youngsters on the other side of the Tasman are not particularly smart this season. Artilleryman, who has been spelling since the spring, is to be examined by a vet. shortly, and if he stows no signs of unsoundness, will be put into work again immediately. It would be unfortunate if the turf lost, such a brilliant racehorse, and concerning Sydney scribe writes: “On the day on which Artilleryman ran clean away from a field of 'Stralla’s best in the Melbourne Cup he was probably the speediest three-year-old ever seen in Australasia.” This Is high praise indeed. Easingwold, the crack Westralian two-year-old, is said to be a magnificent specimen ot the thoroughbred, and has the appearance of a four-year-old. He stands 15.3, and other measurements (girtli 69in, forearm 29in, and below the knee B%in) give some Idea of his splendid proportions. They say that horsemanship is an Inherited quality, but such is not the case with the crack English rider, S. Donoghue. His father was an iron worker, and Donoghue Jnr. was Intended for the same trade, but he ran away to France, begimo attached to a racing stable, and mounted t(ie ladder of fame. During the past season in England he rode 143 winners.
