SLUMP IN SHIPS.

RESULT OF HIGH COSTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Jan. 26. Lord Inchcape, in a letter to the Times referring to the difficulties facing ship-owners as the result of the demands of the Stewards’ Union, says owners may be forced next season to terminate the passenger service to Continental ports. The increased accommodation demanded by the stewards would necessitate giving up the passenger accommodation, resulting in increased fares. Clyde shipbuilders declare that the high cost of production is not the only factor in the shipbuilding slump. The sale of 400 German ships by the Government has also helped to kill new shipping business. Net a single new order has been received for 1921.
