The Daily News. SATURDAY, JANUARY 29, 1921. DIRECT SHIPMENTS

The news that another liner will bring direct imports to Taranaki from England if sufficient cargo is offering will be welcomed by importers throughout the province, who should lose no time in communicating with their buyers at Home and informing them that the C. and D. liner Port Pirie is loading at Hull, Antwerp and London for Auckland, Wellington, and, if sufficient cargo offers, New Plymouth. It is hoped to finally despatch the Port Pirie about the end of February, and she will arrive here about the end of April or the beginning of May. The direct service between England and Taranaki was inaugurated by the Shaw Savill liner Mamari last year, the venture proving of distinct benefit to the commercial community. Not only do direct shipments show a large saving in cost, but an important factor is contained in the prompt receipt of goods by this means as compared with the long delays consequent upon transhipping the cargo at Wellington. There are also the storage charges at Wellington, the coastal freights, the danger of pilfering which ever increases, not to forget the possibility of meeting one of the frequent periods of congestion at Wellington, and the goods being at the mercy of a somewhat irregular coastal service. The notice is not long, but it is ample, and a cable from importers to their agents will provide them with all the unques-i tionable benefits of landing their goods direct. The suggested visit of the Port Pirie provides further recognition by the shipping companies of their satisfaction with the facilities at Taranaki’s deepsea port, for this will mark the first occasion on which a vessel of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line has brought direct shipments to New Plymouth. Vessels of this line are familiar here through their visits to load produce, and it will be remembered that last year the Port Pirie lifted a record cargo of produce, valued at nearly a quarter of a million, from Taranaki. She was also the first steamer to make New Plymouth her only port of cal] in the Dominion. The opportunity is now afforded the Port Pirie of forging another link in the expansion of Taranaki trade by being the first Commonwealth and Dominion liner to bring direct imports here from England, and it is to be hoped the importers of Taranaki will co-operate in prompt action to ensure the required amount of cargo being offered.
