TARANAKI COUNTIES’ CONFERENCE.

MEETING AT ELTHAM. A meeting of the Taranaki Counties’ Conference was held at Eltham on Wednesday. Present: Crs. C. J. Belcher (Eltham County Council) chairman, T. Linn and O. J. Hawken, M.P. (Hawera County), Corkhill, Stewart and Jones Inglewood County), McPhillips (Waimate West County), J. O’Neill (Stratford County), Pigott (Clifton County), J. Connett and A. Morton (Taranaki County), and Cameron (Stratford Borough). The following engineers were in attendance:—Eltham County (M. E. Fitz Gerald), Waimate West County, Inglewood County, and New Plymouth Borough (Cooke). Apologies for absence were received from Cr. E. Walter (Stratford County chairman), and Mr. Sutherland (Mayor of Inglewood). The question of wages was considered, and it was decided to adhere to the conference’s existing standard. The charges in connection with the by-laws were adopted and ordered to be paid. It was resolved that any county council desirous of adopting the by-laws should be permitted to do so on payment of a proportionate share of the legal charges only. - A vote of £125 was made to the secretary (Mr. W. J. Tristram) and £5O to the chairman (Mr, C. J. Belcher) for their past three years’ service. It was resolved that each contributing body be asked to remit the amount of its contribution, and that a banking account be opened with the Bank of New Zealand at Eltham. It was unanimously agreed that another effort be made to form a Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association, that all local bodies be circularised setting forth the Objects, and that a meeting be held at the earliest possible dateIt was decided to hold a further meeting of the conference on 23 at Eltham, when matters of considerable interest to local bodies will be discussed.
