TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. CONCLUSION OF SECTION PLa/ Beautiful weather prevailed for the fourth day of the Taranaki Bowling Centre’s annual tournament yesterday, when good progress was made. The seventh and final round of the section play was decided in the morning, and in the afternoon two rounds of post section play were completed. In this the two life system is adopted, so that it will probably be Saturday evening before the final is reached. The seventh round of fue section play proved fatal to several who had chances of getting into post section play. In Section A, the three leaders (Smart, Mason, and Moffatt) all had wins, and therefore got into the finals with one loss each. In Section B, the game between the leaders resulted in a narrow win for Spurdie, who heads the section with one loss. Billing, with two losses, also got in. McMillan and Bary, who only had two losses, were beaten by H. Fookes and Jury respectively. In Section C, J. D. Sole and S. J. Smith won their matches, the former being the only one to go through unbeaten. In Section D, Humphries won his match, and gets into the final with H. Fookes (Taihape), who beat Des Forges, whilst Ford, of Waitara, was also put out by Bellringer by the narrow margin of one point. In Section E, Price (Fitzroy) had his unbeaten record terminated by Burton (Opunake), By the narrow margin of a point, and this pair get into the finals with one loss each. In Section F, Foy maintained his lead by defeating Crasswell after a close game, and McNeill also won his game, this pair getting into post section play. In Section G, Luscombe and Higgs each won his game, but Jackson (Avon) easily accounted for Wight (St. John’s). Details of the play are:— SEVENTH ROUND. Section “A” (Fitzroy Green). H. Smart 28 v. bye. There were some keen contests, particularly that between Smart and Higgs, which was only decided by an extra head, Smart scoring two. In the second round, in which winners played winners and losers played losers, H. Smart had another great tussle with Burton This game provided one of the 'best exhibitions of the tournament, the skips drawing beautifully ami altering the position of the game with each ball. Burton scored a couple on each of the first two heads, but Smart added eight on the next five heads. Burton drew level with a four on the eighth. A seven on the tenth head saw Burton lead by 15 to 10, but on the fourteenth head the score read 17—17. Burton got a three on the fifteenth head, but Smart scored on the next three, and on the eighteenth lead by 22 —20. Next head Burton got a three. On the twentieth Smart drew the shot with his first ball, only to have Burton change it to three in his favor. Smart’s last shot was a beauty, and gave him three and the lead, 25—23. High-class bowls was ths order in the last head, in which Burton lay one up, eventually losing the game by a -’oint. The pFay throughout frequently evoked applause. Luscombe v. Ala son, Higgs v. Foy. DOMINION TOURNAMENT. YESTERDAY’S PLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The final of the singles- in the Dominion Bowling Association tournament was concluded this afternoon, when J. M. Brackenridge (Newtown, Wellington) defeated Spiller (Sydenham) 23 to 15. On the 20th head Brackenridge took the lead early, and on the fifth head led by 9to 1. Spiller then improved his drawing and on the ninth head the scores were Brackenridge 10, Spiller 8. Thereafter, although the various heads were closely contested, Brackenridge maintained his lead. Spiller scored two in each of the fourteenth and fifteenth heads, bringing the scores to 16 to 13. but Brackenridge added seven points to his total to Spiller’s two before the 20th head, when the game ended. At the conclusion of play the prizes won by the various sections were presented to the successful competitors by Mr. Bush, President of the Dominion Association.
