TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) There will be races at Riccarton. Takapuna and Pahiatua to-morrow. Present indications are for a record meeting at New Plymouth on x an(» Thursday next. On recent form Bonnie Heather, Passenger, Sweet Memory and Kula should run well /t Pahiatua. Very few people thought that. Bonnie Heather was a hack, but Hawera sports found out to their cost when Voluble chased her home in the Douro Cup. The Elysian geiding gave northerners a glimpse of his brilliancy at Trentham last ( week, and punters will be on him to a man in the C.J.C. Midsummer Handicap to-mor-Rational was "stiff" to strike the freak champion Gloaming in the Champion Plate, but his wonderful sprint must have caused some doubts to disturb the minds of those wiseacres who proclaimed Mermin tire two-year-old of the season. So far Rational has started in nine races, of which he has won six, while he has filled the role of runner-up in the remaining three. His stake winnings total £2630. There were many lame horses on the hard going at Foxton on Monday, and one remark overheard was: "’Blimol Look at that (adjective) 'orsel ’E's too sore to lift ’ls blinking foot over a tlsshey paper!" Tinohoro’s performance in the Taka puna Cup was a disappointing one for a fifteen hundred guineas horse. No doubt the wouldbe purchaser is shaking hands with himself now Mr. E. J. Watt won the double at Moorefield on January 15 with a New Zealr.nd-bred pair, All Aboard, by All Black—Float, scoring in the Moorefield Handicap, and Bright Night (Wolwa—La Notte) landing the Flying Handicap. The gift horse, Fluency, keeps on winning good races in Australia, the Anniversary Handicap on Wednesday being the third in three weeks which has fallen to the daughter of Demosthenes and Les Vegas. Fluency invariably starts at long odds, and successes would be all the more pleasant for her fortunate owner, Mr. O. R. Faulkener. Maltgilla, who won the Challenge Stakes in Sydney on Saturday, was ridden by the crack horseman, K. Bracken. At latest advices Glcnacrc, who finished second, was a firm favorite for the race. The Finland—All’s Well colt, for whom Sir Rupert Clarke gave 950 guineas at the yearling sales at Dandwlck in the autumn, will race as Brother Bill. The misuse of members’ tickets is regarded as a serious offence in ’Stralia. The Victoria Racing Club recently fined a. (member £25 for handing his ticket to a friend. In New Zeaand the "not transferable’’ rule is more honored in the breach than in the observance. La Notte, the dam of Bright Night, was bred in Victoria by Mr. W. R. Wilson in 1897, and imported to New Zealand by Mr. E. J. Watt. She never raced, but was a great stud success, producing such great gallopers as Nightfall, Noetuiform, Sun, etc.
