E. J. Kivell was elected secretary of the Stratford Forresters’ Lodge at the fortnightly meeting last night, in succession to Mr. R. E. Plews, who has resigned owing to not being able to spare sufficient time for the work. The work of reforming the road leading to the Stratford Mountain House is proceeding slowly owing to the difficulty in securing sufficient labor. To-day a new gang of men was sent out to the work, which it is hoped will now be pushed forward at a more rapid rate. Mi.--, 11. D. Thomson is in charge of the men employed. No tenders have been received by the Public Works Department for the erection of a new police sergeant’s residence at and in consquence the time for receiving tenders has been extended. Although it was announced some weeks ago that tenders were being called for the erection of the new post office at Stratford, the local office of the Public Works Department has received no advice on the matter, nor have the plans arrived in Stratford yet.
A meeting of the committee of the Stratford Swimming Club was held last night, when further arrangements were made in connection with the forthcoming carnival in February. The date of the carnival has not yet been definitely fixed owing to the uncertainty of the half-holiday question in Stratford at the present time. The Stratford Model Farm will be open to the public from 1 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday), and all interested are asked to avail themselves of the invitation to be present. Members of the committee will be present to explain the working of the farm to the visitors. The headmaster of the Stratford District High School will be in his office from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. on Monday, January 31. when new pupils for the secondary department will be enrolled. The December total of butter-fat returns fjom Mr. F. H. Barnitt’s herd of 24 grade cows, on his farm at Ngaere, was 1085.31 lbs, an average of over 45| lbs per cow. This is regarded as a high average and indicates the good quality of the Ngaere land and what returns may be obtained from careful farming.
