MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, Last Night. The Hon. W. Nosworthy (Minister of Agriculture) paid a visit to, Dannevirke thia afternoon, when he was waited upon by a deputation from the Southern Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Union. The Minister, in reply, traversed the. various points raised by the deputation, and promised to give due consideration to those which concerned his departments. IMPROPER PHOTOGRAPHS. Auckland, Last Night. The sale of nine indecent photographs was admitted in the Police Court today by Charles Davies. Chief Detective McMahon said it was a very had case. The accused was a married man with thirteen children, and was employed as a billiard marker. He sold the photographs to young men who frequented the saloon." Accused said he did not think the photographs were indecent?! The magistrate said different countries had different standards of decency. On the Continent the photographs might be considered quite allowable but in New Zealand they Were not considered decent. He imposed a fine of £26; in default, one month’s imprisonment AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE. Wellington, Last Night. At the meeting of the New Zealand University' Senate to-day, in regard to the failure of the board of studies to draw up a syllabus for the subject of agricultural science, which the Senate had included in the course for the B.A. degree, the following motion by Dr. Anderson (Wellington) waa carried: “That in view of the aetidn of the body referred to, the Senate now reaffirm its decision in the matter and proceed to consider, with a view to adoption without further reference to the board of studies, the syllabus which was submitted to the board, and recommended by a special committee of the Senate appointed to prepare proposals.”
ALLEGED BREACH OF AWARD. Christchurch, Jan. M A judgment of importance to performing musicians was given by Mr. McCarthy at the Magistrate’s Court in a ease brought by the Inspector of Awards against the manager of the Strand Picture Theatre. Th» inspector claimed to recover £lO as penalty for breach of the Christchurch performing musicians' award, alleging that defendant had employed a performer on a mechanical instrument and failed to pay her the wages provided in the award. The performer gave evidence that she was not a musician, and could not play, her duties consisted in putting records on the instrument. The Magistrate held that the award contemplated that the persons covered bv it must be to a certain extent skilled musicians. The attendant of the instrument concerned was not playing or performing in any shape or form, ad was not placed within the meaning of the award. Judgment was given M defendant.
