NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE.

MEETING OF GOVERNORS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 22. The annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute was held to-day, Professor Easterfield presiding. The Minister for Internal Affairs attended the opening, and gave a brief address. Tie said that the £2OOO voted for research had been available for a considerable time. The idea was to work with the Institute and the Cawthorn Institute, but nothing had been decided yet by Mr. Parr and himself for a recommendation to Cabinet. An investigation of the primary and secondary industries should result in a valuable increase in production and exports. They would look to the scientific bodies of New Zealand for assistance along those lines. The meeting then proceeded to transact a quantity of detailed business preliminary to meeting the Science Congress at Palmerston North. Wellington, Last Night. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute regulations were approved for the Hamilton memorial prize, in commemoration of the work of the late Mr. Augutus Hamilton. The prize is a triennial one for the encouragement of beginners in scientific research. The Hector Medal was awarded to Mr. R. Speight for work in geology.
