THE COLONIAL OFFICE.
FUTURE POLICY UNDECIDED. A I QUESTION FOR DOMTNIOJT (. ■ PREMIERS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright < Received Jan. 22, 5,5 p.m. London Jan. 21. The Australian Press Association is officially informed that the future allocation of functions in the Colonial Office has not been determined, pending consultation between Mr, Lloyd George Mr. Winston Churchill (the new Secretary), Lord Milner (the retiring Secretary), and Mr. L. C. Amery (the Undersecretary for the Colonies), after the Paris Conference. Only two matters have been decided. Firstly, that the creation of the Dominions as a separate Ministry will be submitted to the Premiers’ Conference; secondly, attaching Mesopotamia and Palestine to the Colonial Office, involving the creation of a new department. Mr. Amery’s retention of the Under-Secreitaryship has not been decided, pending the redistribution of portfolios.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. London, Jan. 20. The Times, in a leader, says that the term Colonial Office is reminiscent of less spacious days in the history of the Dominions, and suggests the by-geme colonial system. Why not Imperial Office and Secretary of State for Imperial Affairs? it asks. The change would be a visible sign of the new spirit in British dealings with the Dominions which was plain under Lord Milner. It is understood that Mr. Churchill will have charge of Egypt.
