NOTES ON THE RACING. CLOAIMING’S GREAT RUN. AUSTRALASIAN RECORD. (By Telegraph—Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. Racing began with the Jumpers' Flat Handicap. Manlahera was first out, and he led out of the straight from Zola, Lord Nagar, and King Star. Paddington Green tailed the field. Maniahera still held command down the back, udiere the field was bunched. Tljreo furlongs from home Zola ranged alongside Maniahera, and King Star and Pacific Slope moved up. Zola was in front In the straight, where King Star, Lord Nagar, and Pacific Slope unchallenged. The weight beat Pacific Slope, and in a good race to the post King Star won by a neck, with Pacific Slope a length and a half away third and Lord Nagar fourth. King Star was a trifle lucky to beat Zola. Miss Mimic, who had run well on the opening day, was much fancied for the January 'Welter, and others heavily supported were Counter Attack and Sycorax >Jtose Wreath began well and soon took charge, closely followed by Woden and Asterina. With half a mile gone this trio was still in front, and Will Oakland. Miss Mimic, and Sycorax were in good positions. Rose Wreath was still in the lead as heads were turned for home, but here Sycorax and Miss Mimic came away. Miss Mimic won by a. length and a half, with Nobleman third two lengths further off. and 80-peep fourth. Creme de Menthe and Pluto were the best backed in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Francaise and Moonstruck were left at the start. The field was well bunched as it swung on to the course proper, but Backsheesh and Pluto singled themselves out. before the distance was reached. Tl?e pair fought out a hard finish to the post, and Backsheesh got the decision by a neck. Scion was three lengths away third, and Creme de Menthe was fourth.
Although there were only four starters for the Kelburn Plate great Interest was taken in the race. There was some delay at the start, but when the field was sent, away Rational was the first td show out, and Sweet Memory got chopped right back. Rational wtas in front as they raced on to the course proper, and at the distance he was still there. It looked as though Gloaming unight bo shut in, but inside the half distance Deeley pulled out and went round Rational. Once clear the big bay fairly flew, and got up in time to win by a neck. Statuette was three lengths away third, and Sweet Memory well back last. It was a wonderful performance of Gloaming’s to win after the bad run he got. He showed himself to be a great performer. The official time, 45sec., establishes a fresh Australasian record for half a mile. Eleus, accounted unlucky in the Cup, was fancied for the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Maioha was rushed to the front, and too}: up a position on the rails. Esperance assumed the lead before, the field turned out of the straight, with Maiohn. and Eleus in behind her, and Volo near the tall. The order was almost unchanged till the turn for home. At the bottom of the straight Eleus moved up, and a little later Lovematch looked like coming away, but failed to go on. Eleus won nicely by a. length and a half from Esperance, who was a neck in front of Lovematch, who was just in front of First Salute. Maioha finished well up. In the Douro Cup Bonnie Heather drew the rails, but Valley Rose was first away and Strategy soon joined him. The pair led to the home turn with Bonnie Heather well placed and Voluble in the middle of a bunched field. Several appeared to have chances at the bottom of the straight, but. at the distance Voluble got through .and the race looked to he well over. From the half distance Bonnie Heather came fast and beat Voluble home by a length and a. half; with Prince Hal a good third. Bonnie Heather got in light, considering his performance in the Cup, and Voluble, with his 9.3, ran a great race. Gray threaded his way through the ruck in a. masterly fashion, but had not a final run to reply to Bonnie Heather’s challenge. Humbug, who had been something of a disappointment of late, was tried in the Metropolitan Handicap with Gray up (his usual, pilot, R. Reed, having been engaged for Chrysostom, who was scratched), and was sent out nearly as well backed as Silver Link. Silver Link was first away, and Humbug and Blackimail began smartly. Humbug led at the bottom of the straight and fought out the finish all the way to the box. Humbug always had a shade the best of it, and won by a neck. Silver Link finished fast three-quarters of a length away. Royal Stag was fourth and Parisian Diamond. Nursing Sister, and Kinsem were all close up. Before the start of the Camp Handicap Egotism twice got rid of Deeley, wht was allehtly cu/ about the face, and was repluo-
fid by M. McCarten. Egotism made an easy thing of the race, winning by two lengths from Prince Martian, with Hepta third and Blackhead and Sandy McDonald next. An outsider in Deucalion ran well.
