Briand, the new Premier, said the reconstruction of the destroyed industries was only possible when Germany carried out reparations. To see this done was the Government's first duty. France, he added, had great confidence in her friend and ally, England, and intimate relations between the two countries were the very foundation of France’s foreign policy. He was also sure America would give the same support in order to obtain reparation for losses which she gave during the war. It was impossible to resume relations with Russia while Russia is not prepared to carry out the engagements entered into by the former Russian Government, added M. Briand.—Aus.N Z Cable Assn.
NO REAL PEACE. : ERM ANY MUST DISARM. SECURITY OF FRANCE. Received Jan. 21, 7.30 p.m. Paris, Jan. 20. M. Briand, in the Chamber, declared there was still no real peace with Germany, and security was possible to France only if Germany was disarmed. He urged the necessity of prompt peace with Turkey, and emphasised the strict need of reducing the French Army to the strict minimum. Economy in the national finances was necessary. France could no longer bear the cost of reconstruction, which was due from Germany.—Reuter Ser-
