RUAHINE ARRIVES.
WITH 564 IMMIGRANTS. ARTISANS AND Z DOMESTICS. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruahine, which arrived at Wellington on Wednesday from London and Southampton, via Panama, brought a large number of passengers, including 564 immigrants. Leaving Southampton, where the passengers embarked, on December 2, the Ruahine arrived at Newport Nows on December 16 after a rather rough trip across the Atlantic. She left on the 1 9th again, and after touching at Kingston and Colon went direct to Wellington, the latter part of the trip being accompli died in fine weather and smooth seas. All the passengers landed in excellent health and spirits. There were several minor accidents to passengers while on the run across, but nothing of a serious nature was to be chronicled. Quite a pleasing feature of the voyage occurred on Monday evening, two days before the vessel’s arrival at Wellington, when one of the passengers gave birth to a girl child, which it is stated is to be given Ruahine a-s its name. The Christmas and New Year festivities were kept up on board while at sea, a huge Christmas tree being provided with all manner of good pre-Vnts for the children, and on New Year's Eve the Scottish members on board gave a bright concert on deck, being enjoyed by all. The great majority of the immigrants booked for destinations situated in the North Island. The actual figures were as follow: —Auckland 66 men. 68 women and 32 children; Napier, 8 men, 10 women, and 2 children; Gisborne, G men, 7 women, and 4 children: New Plymouth, 9 men, 4 women, and 2 children; Wanganui. 5 men and 1 woman: Wellington. 162 men, women and children; Lyttelton, 36 men. 32 women, and 6 children; Port Chalmers, 21 men, 20 women, and 5 children; Bluff. 3 men and 1 woman: Timaru, 8 men, 10 women, and 1 child; Nelson, 3 mon and 2 women; Picton and Greymouth 1 woman each. The Imperial overseas settlement scheme accounted for over 300 of the immigrants, while the passengers no"ininated are numerically smaller than usual.
