January 20, The annual meeting of the Stratford Swimming Club was held last evening at Smith’s tea rooms. There was a fair attendance of swimmers, and Mr. F. D. Gaffaney was voted to the chair. The balance-sheet showing a credit of over £2 in hand was adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: Patron, Mr. R. Masters, MP.; president, Mr. F. D. Gaffaney; vice-presidents, Messrs. T. G. Grubb and Gay lard; secretary, Mr. L. F. Baird; treasurer, Mr. W. Pinhey; committee, Messrs. F. H. Masters, J. Dodd, W. Grubb, C. S. Kelly, and A. J. Davey. It was decided that the committee be recommended to hold a carnival on the afternoon of Saturday, February 12, and Messrs. Baird and Davey were appointed a sub-committee to take any steps necessary to have the appointments at the bath in proper order for the carnival. The following programme of events for the carnival was suggested: 50 yards maiden, and 50 yards and 100 yards open, for men; 50 yards open, for boys; 50 yards races for primary and High School boys; 25 yards and 50 yards open races for girl^; four-part race; diving for men, boys, women and girls; and a relay race.

GENERAL. A considerable'amount of uncertainty exists in Stratford at the present time in regard to the railway leases in Broadway Central. The majority of these leases are due to expire on March 31 next, and the Department has not made its intentions public as yet.

On several occasions recently officials of the Railway Department have been mysteriously at work taking measurements of the different buildings and noting various matters' in their notebooks. All their activities hare been clothed in the greatest, secrecy, however, and the occupiers of premises on the railway leases are in a state of uncertainty as to whether their leases will he renewed for another twelve ninths or whether they will be put up to auction It is about time some indication of the Department’s intentions was made public so that the occupiers can make suitable arrangements for themselves.

Mr. Kilpatrick, manager of the Toko branch of the Stratford Dairy Factory, has been appointed to an important position with a dairy factory in the Palmerston North district, and will leave Tok6 on Tuesday. Mr. E. J. Brittain, first assistant at the Toko Factory, has recently removed to the Hamilton district.

The borough workmen are at present • busily engaged on the workf of reimetalling Warwick Road, from Mountain Road to the borough boundary. It is the indention of the council to tar-seal this road during the present summer if possible. The work of erect in er the new technical school building in Swansea Road is proceeding apace. arVl the building has now assumed fairly big proportions. The shortage of cement is, however, preventing the work from being done as quickly as is desired. ' Af the result of injuries received in a blasting accident at Toko on the 7th in st., Albert Zurich, laborer, aged 30, died in the Stratford hospital to-day. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
