The Customs officials prevented one of the Tofua’s passengers landing after he stated he served part of a five years’ sentence in New Zealand. He was released on condition he left the country. He will be sent back to New Zealand by the Moeraki.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. A SENATOR’S DEATH. Received Jan. 20, 10.10 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 20. The death took place of Senator Guthrie as a result of injuries caused by being knocked down by a tram in the city. A memorial service was held in Queen’s Hall, Parliament House, prior to the body being sent to Adelaide.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RELEASED FROM QUARANTINE Sydney, Jan. 20. Forty passengers of the Ventura, who were quarantined owing to the smallpox on board the ship, have been released. The Ventura sails on January 27 for San Francisco.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ESMOND® DEPARTING. Sydney, Jan. 20. Mr. Esmonde is endeavoring to arrange a passage in an outgoing steamer, in view of the indefinite hold-up of the Makura.-Aus.-NJZ. Cable Assn. LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLORS. Sydney, Jan. 20. It has been ascertained that the Governor is opposed to appointments to the Legislative Council at present, though five or six will be appointed when Parliament meets. Mr. Mutch, Minister of Education, states that the Ministry will npt carry on with dishonor. It will rather resign and let somebody else do so.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ARBITRATION OR STRIKE. Sydney, Jan. 20. The central branch of the Australian Workers’ Union took a ballot on the question of arbitration or strike. It resulted in favor of the former by 2404 votes to 1579.—Au5.-N.Z.
