BOWLING
DOMINION TOURNAMENT. SMART'S RINK BEATEN, 3y Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The bowling tournament rink championship competition was advanced another stage’ to-day, when the contest was narrowed down to the semi-final. The Governor-General attended in the afternoon, and was received ‘by Mr. F. Bush (president of the Dominion Bowling Association) and Mr F. Meadowcroft (president of the Wellington Bowling tre), and he met with a cordial reception. Early morning rain made the greens heavy. The teams remaining in the competition were:—Reid (Lyall Bay), Jury (Karangahake), Graham (Remuera), Rennie (Christchurch), Marriatt (Linwood), Smart (New Plymouth), McWhannel (Hataitai), Hain (North End), and London (Wanganui). Reid and Jury had not lost a match, so had two “lives” in reserve, while the others had one. The most interesting of the early garnet? was that in which McWhannel beat Hain. Play was varied throughout, and was a splendid exhibition of bowling. In the final head MeWhannel’s last shot enabled Hataitai to lead by bne. Hain was short, and the local team won by a point. Smart (New Plymouth) met Marriatt (Linwood), and secured a somewhat easy victory by eleven points, with one head unplayed. Rennie (Christchurch) and Graham (Remuera) saw an interesting game in the early stages, but Rennie’s team played like a book and won by six points. Jury (Karangahake) and Reid (Lyall Bay) fought out a splendid game, the latter winning by one point.
In the afternoon Jury met Smart, and again playing splendidly Jury secured the verdict by two points. Karangahake have an unbroken record in the section play. Rennie and Reid also played, the latter being defeated by six points. London (Wanganui- and McWhannel (Hataitai) played a great game/ the latter leading by five points with only two heads to go. The game was in doubt until London sent easy Eliots, Hataitai being five up.
The draw for to-morrow is:—McWhannel (Hataitai) plays Jury (Karangahake); Rennie (Christchurch), a bye.
In the “come-again” competition Norwood (Victoria) and. Dimock (Island Bay) play off in the final to-morrow, all the visiting rinks in the semi-finals being beaten to-day. The question as to whether Jury or Rennie should have a bye to-morrow was discussed to-night. As Jury was unbeaten it was agreed he was entitled to the bye. but one of the rules under which the tournament is conducted is that the team having the greatest number of wins in section play is entitled to the bye. Tn the section play Rennie had won seven and Jury six games, so the- former was given the bye.
TOO MUCH TIME OCCUPIED. Wellington, Jan. 18. A meeting of delegates from the various bowling centres and the Dominion Council last night discussed a protest from the Canterbury Centre, which read: “That this centre protests against the arrangements made by the Dominion Council for the playing of the tournament necessitating such an inordinate. extension of time for the completion of the tournament.” During the discussion which followed it was suggested that rinks matches and paiYs and singles matches should be separated, and it was decided to ask the centres for an expression of opinion on the question. The question of appointing a permanent secretary was also discussed, and it was decided to plac§ the suggestion before the centres. THE AVON CLUB. In the champion ties, J. Masters beat Judd: Thompson'beat Judd; J. S. Rowe beat Thompson.
