OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Seaside Fete on Wednesday promises to be a record one. Several good prizes have been allocated, particularly in the tug-of-war, and treasure hunt. The side shows will bring in the shekels. A beautifully finished cake on view ilk' Miss V. Beveridge’s shop window- has attracted entries to the extent of £4. Alessrs Brunette, fe. Evans, Airs. Nightingale and Afiss Beveridge have donated handsome prizes.
Five fishing boats work out from Middieton Bay when weather and time conditions are suitable, and they have made good hauls lately. Mr. Brunette has also a pastime fishing output, in a big draw net and a fiat-bottom boat. The sporting fraternity muster and draw the net with satisfactory results, as many as 150 fish of al) descriptions having been drawn to land in the Opunake Bay. Opunake, like Napier, Sydney and other large towns, has fixed on Satur-* day as the statutory half-holiday. What about the business people making Afonday evening the late night? Alonday is sale day, and it should be more convenient for the working man as he gets paid on Saturday and will of necessity make Monday the day of purchase.
The good price paid out for butter-fat by the Opunake Dairy Factory makes dairying in a small way a lucrative side line. An important proposal made by the county engineer at December’s meeting has so far not been discussed by the councillors. The engineer reported that he could save the ratepayers a good deal of money if the Council would supply the finances for opening up an entrance to an unlimited supply of boulder sitonje that ciin he obtained, and facilitate delivery of stone by moans of up-to-date carrying plant. It was a business-like proposal and should receive the earnest and favorable consideration of councillors Last Wed: sday the M.inaia bowlers defeated Opunake on the Opunake green. The local colts’ team was successful against the visitors. The Gilbert-Cornwall musical combination gave an excellent musical entertainment here last week. The Opunake Horticultural Society have fixed the date of the Autumn show for 2nd February. This year the.society hold it mi a Alonday instead of Wednes- ’ day. Alonday is the market day, and the society have changed the day to suit the country folk. Dr. T. IL Watt has been absent on a well eivned holiday. Dr. Boyd, of Kaponga, acted' in his stead. Constable Clouston has returned from his holiday trip to Napier. Constable O’Neill, of Rahotu was in charge here during his absence.
