SECRETARY OF COLONIES.
MR. CHURCHILL MENTIONED. ACCEPTANCE REPORTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. 9 Received Jan. 18, 7.30 p.m. London, Jan. 17. There are persistent rumors that Mr. Winston Churchill (Secretary for War), who is holiday-making in France, has been offered the Chief Secretaryship of the Colonies. Nothing is officially known although the newspapers assert that Mr. Churchill has accepted the post.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Jan. 18, 9-10 p.m. London, Jan. 18. The newspapers state definitely that Mr. Churchill has accepted the Colonial Office, though an official announcement may bp delayed for a few days. The Daily News protests against the appointment as being essentially mischievious. Mr. Churchill is reported to have said he would not wield less authority than his predecessors. The newspaper interprets this to mean that the Colonial Office will continue to transact business and also undertake new business in connection with the mandates.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [The Secretaryship of the Colonies has become vacant through the resignation of Lord Milner.]
