WAITARA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Jan. 15, The Waitara Borough Council met on Wednesday last. Present: The Mayor and Crs. Gribbon, Rennie, Jaggs and Jones. The waterworks overseer reported that filling the school baths in the daytime. affected consumers.—Left to the works committee. The electrical engineer reported that the peak load for the year was reached on New Year’s Eve, making a 25 per cent, overload, but the plant stood up to it well. Several alterations had been made to the lines in the main street, and the shops were now on an independent circuit. GENERAL. The balance-sheet of the recent performances of “Princess Chrysanthemum” show a profit of £46 4s, and the proceeds have been equally divided between the Soldiers and Civilians’ Club and St. John’s Church. The snorts of rod and line report good catches ‘of fish c-fi the shore locally and at Pukearuhe. Three lines off the local beach the other day recorded 40 schnapP& At the Waitara Mail office may be seen the manuscript minuses of the meeting held in Waitara on August 6, 1877 when it was decided to form a rowing club. The writing was by the (hand of the late Rev. Phillip Walsh, who also occupied the chair.. The late reverend gentleman was the initiator Oi the regattas on the river. . The stumps and bats belonging to the old cricket club have come to the light of day again. An elevein,comprised of freezing works employees are strenuously practising with the leather and willow to meet Urenui in a week’s time. Probably more matches will follow, and the old-time game will be revived m Waitara. PERSONAL. The engagement of Mr. J. G. Russell, late of Waitara and now of Pukekohe, to Miss Taylor, is announced. Miss Taylor is organist of the Anglican Church, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, London. -The friends of Miss May Jenkins will be pleased to hear that she has secured a responsible position in the firm of Messrs. Grace Brothers in Sydney.. Miss Jenkins is head of one of the firm’s departments, and has a staff of seven assistants.
