Mr. W. A. Sheat, 8.A., of Lake Road. Hawera, has received advice that at the recent law examinations he was successful in passing in five subjects for the LL.B, and law professional examinations.

Mr. A. H. Goss, a member of the staff of Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co., Ltd., Wellington, for many years in the Taranaki district, having resigned his position *in order to enter into business on his own account at New Plymouth, was the recipient of a presentation from the management and staff on .Saturday morning. Mr. H. D. Brown, who has been connected with the Auckland office of R. G. Dunn and Cq. for over twelve years, has severed his connection in order to go to the United States. Mr. H- C. Godden, for a number of years in charge of the Dunedin branch, succeeds to the management of the Auckland ofSce. The Rev. A. C. Lawry, pastor of the St. Albans circuit of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, has been released by his congregation in order that he may make a preliminary canvass in connection with the centenary celebrations of Methodism in New Zealand. Mr. Lawry has been appointed general secretary of the celebrations, which will be held in twelve months* time. The Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, left Auckland by midday express yesterday for Wellington. His Excellency will preside over a meeting of the Executive Council at Wellington to-day, and will also -invest a number of officers with military distinctions. It is also expected he will be present at the Dominion bowling tournament. Lord Jellicoe will return to Auckland to-morrow morning.—Press Association. Mr. J. H. Baker, formerly Assistant-Surveyor-General of New Zealand, and at one time Commissioner of Crown Lands for Canterbury, is paying a visit to Christchurch. From 1857, when he was a cadet, he made progress until he was surveyor and then Commissioner of Crown Lands. About 1890 he removed to Wellington to take up the Commissionership. ■ Subsequently he was appointed Assistant Surveyor-General. He resigned in 1896, and went to England, where he has resided ever since.

At the meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools Board last night, the first business was the election of a chairman for the. ensuing year. Mr. L. C. Sladden (last year’s chairman) was proposed and seconded, but he resolved to adhere to his previous decision not to again stand for nomination for the chairmanship. However, on the earnest requests of members, he consented to “carry on” for the present. The question will be before the next meeting of the board, when it is understood that Mr. J. S. Fox (absent last night owing to illness) will be nominated for the positei.
