IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE.

854 BY THE PAKEHA. ARTISANS AND DOMESTICS. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s liner Pakeha, which arrived at Wellington on Sunday from London and Southampton, via Panama, brought a very large quota of immigrants to the Dominion. The new arrivals left Southampton on December 9, and had a splendid trip all the way across an average speed of 13| knots being maintained by the steamer, with the result that 85*4 third-class landed in perfect health and spirits. The new arrivals are of a very fine type, the total being comprised of skilled tradesmen, farm labourers, miners, gardeners, and domestics (says the Wellington Times). They will undoubtedly be welcome additions to the population of the Dominion. The majority of the 7>5 domestics are coming out to positions, but there are a few for whom situations have not yet been found. The destinations and the quotas for the ports are as follow:—Auckland 230. Wellington 300, Napier and Gisborne 64, Lyttelton, Christchurch and West Coast 160, Dunedin 100/ These figures, of course, include over 200 children. Of the immigrants 301 were ‘’nominated,” comprising 08 males, 120 women and children; 73 came out under the overseas settlement scheme; while 145 men, 51 women and children are classified un. der the farm labourers’ .and artisans’ scheme. Tn addition there are 75 domestics who came out under the charge of the Misses M. and L. S. Barber, New Zealand Government rtiatrons. Those who are nominated are proceeding to friends, and those included in the category of the overseas settlement scheme are ex-soldiers or war workers, and are granted complimentary passages. Tn cases where the immigrants have no friends, the Immigration Department will guarantee to find them employment.
