AMERICANS IN AUSTRALIA. PATTERSON BEATS JOHNSTON. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 16, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 16. The weather was beautiful, the court good, and the attendance a record yesterday for the matches against the Americans. Singles.—Tilden beat Brookes 6 —*l, 6—4. Brookes’ serving and placing were superb on the side and base lines, while Tilden’s receiving and dbvering of the court was brilliant. Long back-hand drives formed a feature of the play of both players. Tilden gave a clever exhibition of skimming the not. Tilden opened the second set with a deadly volley service, Brookes playing well to the side lines. There was great rally play on the side and -half-court lines. Tilden was scoring -with his service strokes, Brookes receiving and placing splendidly, Tilden won the ninth and tenth games dashingly. Patterson beat Johnston 6—2, 4—6, 6 —4. Johnston serving began the scoring, placing well on the base lino. Patterson returned beautifully, showing great improvement on yesterday’s display, and scoring repeatedly by smashing lobs delivered by Johnston. The final set was full of long drives. In doubles, Washburn and Johnston beat O’Hara Wood and Hawkes 5—7, 6—3, 4—6, 6—2, 6—3. An element of humor was introduced by Washburn and Johnston in competing for the strike from lobs, and there was no serioiis play until the last set. America won the. first, the second, and the fourth, and Victoria the third, the fifth, and the sixth, making three all. America followed with the next three and won the set.—'Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
