RATES NOT PAID.
ELTHAM COUNTY’S POSITION. £7OOO OUTSTANDING The collection of rates in the Eltham County is proceeding slowly, notwithstanding that the council have given repeated reminders to ratepayers. The clerk (Mr. A. Tiplady) reported to the monthly meeting on Saturday that over £7OOO was still outstanding. After the 29th inst the 10 per cent penalty would be added. A motion was moved by Cr. McGuinness that a committee, consisting of Councillors Belcher (chairman), Messana, and Gifford,,be set up to draw the names of a certain number of ratepayers to be sued for the recovery of the rates. This is really in accordance with a resolution passed a/, the previous meeting of the (jouncil, when it was decided that the names of all ratepayers whose rates were .outstanding be plaeed in a hat and tl|e names of two, from each riding be drawn, and that they be sued. I suppose that it has to be carried out,” said Cr. McWilliam, “but we know that a number are working men doing all they possibly can to get along.” He said the Omona riding was an exceptional one, and there was no money coming in.; The wool market was fiat and the stock market was dull. He would no'T like to see men placed in the position of having to “file.” The chairman (Cr. Belcher) pointed out thab the council would have a tre. expenditure to meet next month, j Cr.
