VEALE’S ESTATE.
WATER TO BE LAID ON. EXTENSION OF ELECTRIC LIGHT. “The provision of roads, light, and water to that portion of the borough known as Veale’s Estate has long been a bone of contention between the Council and the residents, the Council contending that the number of resident* did not warrant the comparatively large expenditure involved,” remarks the New Plymouth general manager in his monthly report. I am pleased to say that the matter has now to some extent been happily settled. “The Labor Department, having purchased a number of sections in the estate for the purpose of erecting workers’ houses thereon, has now confirmed the arrangement tentatively arrived at in September last. Under this arrangei ment the council will lay a four-inch ' water main in Lorna Street and Cal- ; vert Street as far as section 39. The ! electric light mains will also be carried to the same point. The cost of the work was originally estimated at £2095, of which the Labor Department will pay one half and the borough one half. The trustees of Veale’s Estate will provide a further sum of £524, which vill be spent by the council in forming Lorna Street and metalling the same with gaol gravel and forming one footpath. The council will do as much work as possible for the £524, but is under no obligation to spend anything more than that amount. This arrangement is a very satisfactory one to all concerned, more particularly the residents in the locality, for there is no question that in the absence of such an agreement it would have been many years before the council could have seen its way to provide the facilities mentioned..”
