BACKBLOCKS SCHOOLS.
MORE EXPERIENCED TEACHERS. IMPROVED SCHEME ADOPTED. Ly Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last NightThe Minister of Education this evening stated that it is proposed to establish a service of itinerant teachers for the backblocks. At present a backblocks school is staffed largely with young people, who have no better equipment than a sixth standard certificate, and salaries are paid by means of a capitation grant of £l5 per head of pupils. The result, said the Minister, is that education lin some of the backblock places is of a rather indifferent character. It is proposed to pay a salary of £250, plus allowances, to capable and experienced young teachers, who will go from family to family, and give two or three days in each small cenfce.
