FRENCH CRISIS.

©PINIONS IN GERMANY. HOPES AND FEARS FROM FRANCE. HARSHER TREATMENT EXPECTED. Stf Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyrljbt Received Jan. 14, 5.5 p.m, Berlin, Jan. 13. The hopes and fears of Germany are reflected in the comments on the fall of the French Ministry. The papers discuss a possible new phase cf the French post-war policy, and reactionary organs express the opinion that the Chamber wants a stronger man than M. Leygues to tackle Britain and Italy on the question of Germany’s disarmament, and they expect a harsher policy towards Germany. Socialist organs believe France’s financial difficulties will compel her to approach Germany with a view to reaching an economic, and ultimately, a political understanding.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. MANY CAUSES GIVEN. ALLIED CONFERENCE EMBARRASSED. London, Jan. 13. The* Paris correspondent of the Daily News states that M. Leygues’ fall is attributable to the industrial crisis, unemployment, and frequent postponements of the expected German payments of reparations. The Daily Telegraph says editorially that some groups have taken the opportunity of disapproving of M. Millerand’s avowed policy of active intervention in politics through the Ministry, which would be his own instrument rather than that of the Chamber Paris Press speculations as to M. Leygues’ successor include MM. Poincare, Viviani and Peret (President of tlje Chamber), whose speech was largely responsible for the resignation of the Cabinet The crisis is expected to entail a postponement of the Allied Premiers’ Conference. A number of deputies have given notice of resolutions that all foreigners be expelled from France next year if unable to prove that they have definite means of subsistence; also that heavy taxation be imposed on all wealthy foreign residents.—Aus.-N_Z.
