A London correspondent writes: Tn spite of increased cost, the demand for paper is greater than ever. Every day sees new uses being devised for paper, and it is now used for clothes, sacks, string, thread, table and bed linen and a score of other articles and materials. As a consequence publishers arc finding increased (ilffioulty in getting enough paper to meet their demands, and in most cases the cost of production is greater than the price actually received for a newspaper or magazine. Great , Britain is using to-day something lii<o five million tons of paper a year, and this is said to be throe million tons short of actual requirements. America, ■ the largest consumer of paper in tho > world, uses over thirty-eight- million ’ tons of paper a year, and finds herself 1 compelled to look abroad for a considerj able part of her supplies. The difficulty ’ comes in that with increased demand i there is a danger of raw material runl ning short, and scientists are experiwith new substances.
