MAILS BY AIR.
SUGGESTED SERVICES. PROBABLE DELIVERY ACROSS COOK STRAIT. The early inauguration of an aerial mail service between Christchurch and Marlborough is expected to be materially hastened by the decision of leading Blenheim residents to erect a hangar near Blenheim. Captain Dickson, of the Canterbury Aviation Company, and Captain Isitt, representing the Air Boiard, arrived in Blenheim recently for the purpose of selecting a suitable aerodrome. After careful inspection they selected an area of sixty acres of level, clear municipal Sand, two miles out of Blenheim. The progress committee of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, which has had the matter of aviation before it since Captain Dickson’s last visit, called a meeting, at which the Mayor of Blenheim and members of local bodies and oth<F leading citizens were present Captain Dickson and Captain Isitt gave an interesting outline of the proposed services, one of which, between Blenheim and Christchurch, is likely to be started in the near future. As soon as a hangar was provided, Captain Dickson said‘his company would station an Avro machine at Blenheim permanently. Concerning the cross-Strait service, he said that some months must elapse ere it was started, as a flying boat or seaplane would have to be procured, to. enable a landing to be made on Wellington harbor. The meeting passed a resolution undertaking to eee that the site selected would be secured and a hangar ereeiefl. In returning thanks, Captain Isitt said that Blenheim was giving a lead in aviation matters which might well be emulated by larger centres.
