THE ALLIES.
UNITED STATES WITHDRAWS. NO PART IN SUPREME COUNCIL. GERMANY MUST FULFIL TREATY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 12, 5.5 p.m. Paris, Jan. 11. The American Ambassador informed M. Leygues that the United States has decided not to be further represented on the Ambassadors’ Council, and has also decided to rdfrain froiu taking part in the next meeting of the Supreme Council. America will continue to participate in the work of the reparations commission. The Matin declares this decision has been taken owing to the French demand that Germany should be compelled to fulfil her pledges. M. Leygues, in the course of an interview, "expressed his intention to secure the execution of the Versailles Treaty. France would exact what was her due quietly, and with calm, unshakeable firmness, and with justice to her former enemies and justice to herself. He realised that before the world could arise cinders of the great fire all the civilised nations must collaborate, and France and Germany also.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. y ACTION MERELY FORMAL. NO PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE. Received Jan. 12, 7.30 p.m. Paris, Jan. 11. A semi-official note points out that the American decision to quit the Supreme Council is merely formal, as America haa not participated since 1919, except in an observer’s capacity. Formal action is necessary in view of President Wilson’s retirement, though German propagandists in America are suggesting that American sympathies are with Ger-many.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
