PRICE OF TOBACCO.
INCREASE AT WELLINGTON. - ■ s NO ADVICE IN TARANAKI, An increase in the price of tobacco came into effect in Wellington yesterday. From enquiries made by a Daily News representative last night it was gathered that Taranaki retailers have not been advised of the increase. The which will not affect cigars and cigarettes, will operate over most brands of tobacco, especially those brands that are in popular use. Lines of tobacco sold previously at Is fid a tin~wlll now cost on an average Is Bd, although some lines will be increased by 3d, making the selling price retail Is 9d (says yesterday’s Dominion). The increase was not generally expected. On January 5, a cable message from New York stated that at Lexington, Kentucky, and at Louisville, and other tobacco centres, at recent sales buyers offered only IO per cent of the 1920 prices Tobacco that sold at 35 cent* a pound last year brought only cents for a similar quantity. In American retail circles, however, there is no report of any material lowering of prices.. The last official increase in the retail price of tobacco was made in Wellington at the end of January, 1920, when the price of the average brand of cigarette was increased from 3d to 9d per packet of 10, and the price of cartons or tins of tobacco to Is 6d, following a conference with the Board of Trade. In September of last year it was thought that a further increase would be necessary, but in. very few cases was any additional charge made.
