TAR-SEALING ROADS.
The announcement made at Tuesday’s meeting of the Taranaki County Council by the chairman (Mr. J. S. Connett) that the work of tar-sealing the county roads is to be started next week, will be received with much satisfaction throughout the Province. The county has suffered considerably through not having faced this work some yea”S back, and it was evident that the longer this delay lasted the more serious would become the problem of coping with the effects of the motor traffic on the county roads. Mr Connett considers it will be passible to complete about ten miles of tar-sealing this year, as he does not anticipate much difficulty as to labor. It is to be hoped that his estimate is on the conservative side, and that it may be exceeded appreciably, but even ten miles of tar-sealed road will be a boon, and as the work proceeds it will help to solve the financial problem with which the Council has had to struggle for some years past. The plant procured will certainly prove a good asset, and though the initial expenditure may be heavy it is such a good business investment that it will pay for itself over and over again. The question of funds for the upkeep of these main roads has yet to be settled, but it is expected this matter will be dealt with in the next session of Parliament. Meanwhile the travelling public will cordially welcome the action of the County Council in setting to work to bring the main roads up to date.
