AGAINST TOLL-GATES
ATTITUDE OF THE GOVERNMENT. A COMMISSION TO INQUIRE. On Saturday the chairman of the Taranaki County Council (Mr. J. S. Connett), who waited on the Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) in regard to county fnatters, also brought up the question of the council’s application made some time ago for permission to erect three toll gates in the County. Mr. Connett stated that the Council had raised a loan of £40.000 for tar sealing work, and also had a heavy rate. They desired some assistance either by motor taxation, such as a levy on tyres, or by toll-gates. Mr Coates replied that as far as the Department was concerned they were against toll gates. Mr. Connett pointed out that the Stratford County had a toll gate for the purpose of maintaining the ma,in road. He did not think motorists objected to pay toll if they were provided with a good road. After some discussion the Minister said he was prepared to let the matter be decided by a commission, probablyconsisting of his own engineers. There were seven applications in all for permission to erect toll gates in the Taranaki district, and the question would be whether permission should be given, and for how many gates.
